November News

Just in case you were getting worried, we’d like to assure you we have been busy working on the physical release of Black Box Recordings!

What to expect…
Keeping to the idea of collaboration that’s been central to this project from the beginning, we’ve asked a number of visual artists to create videos to accompany the tunes. Claire Guerin and Dylan Hodd co-shot/directed a video for Orientation, while Claire is also working with Aodghan O’Flaherty to create visuals for Johnston’s Cows.

We’re also hoping to include some remixes from a number of people. If anyone would like to create a remix of their own then drop us a mail and we can provide  stems of each instrument.

The surround sound mixes will include the binaural recording techniques that John Murphy experimented with while we were recording over in France. A short making of documentary will show how exactly this was achieved as well as give an account of our time in France.

As for the physical package itself… we’re not telling!

When to expect it…
Currently, the expectation is to have the physical release delivered to your door before the new year.

In other news…
Black Box Recordings has been available for free download for the last number of weeks. The recordings are available under a creative commons license which means anyone can use them without seeking our permission for non-commercial projects. So tell all your friends! Tunes here: http://tenpastseven.bandcamp.com/album/black-box-recordings

Since our once in a lifetime adventure in France we’ve been working on a few different projects. An experimental film collaboration with Guerin for Seesound event in The Guesthouse, Cork has been released on a DVD which also features the likes of John Godfrey, Paul Hegarty and Max Le Cain. http://www.vimeo.com/20367777 Another tune, Bothar Buí has been used in the soundtrack for a short film in the UK. Once again we would like to thanks to everyone for financially facilitating this project!

Maths/Music Documentaries

Maths and Music go hand in hand. We’ve always been inspired by number sequences when making up or tunes. Johnston’s Cows takes some ideas from Tom Johnston and his idea of found mathematics.

Here’s a few Documentaries about Science and Music:

The Code is a BBC doc. that investigates how mathematics permeates the physical world.

The Music Instinct: Science and Song features Bobby McFerrin and goes though examines Music through science and anthropology.

How Music Works looks at the absolute fundamentals of sound and music. I find the stuff about non-western music really interesting in this.
